Choosing the correct mattress size is only one part of a successful purchase. The mattress must also travel from the delivery vehicle to the room where it will be used.
Most deliveries follow a straightforward route: through the entrance, into a lift or up a staircase, then through the bedroom door. However, Malaysian homes come in many layouts. Narrow staircases, sharp landings, low ceilings, small lifts, security grilles and tight bedroom entrances can turn the final few metres into the most difficult part of the journey.
Our NeckPro delivery team has encountered situations where a full-size mattress could not turn naturally at a narrow staircase. In another exceptional case, the usual indoor route was unsuitable and the team had to assess access through an upper-floor balcony.
These experiences taught us something worth sharing: before ordering a mattress, do not measure only the bedroom. Check the entire delivery route.
When a Mattress Fits the Room—but Cannot Reach It
A customer may have enough floor space for a Queen or King mattress and a correctly sized bed frame. That does not automatically mean the mattress can reach the room.
A full-size mattress has three relevant dimensions:
- Width affects whether it can pass through doors, gates and lift entrances.
- Length affects whether it can rotate around stair landings and corridors.
- Thickness affects how much space it occupies when tilted or turned.
Its construction matters too. Some mattresses have more flexibility, while thick, structured or extra-firm models may be harder to bend around a tight corner. A mattress should never be folded or forced beyond what its construction safely allows, as this may damage its comfort layers, border or spring system.
This is why a doorway measurement alone is not enough. The narrowest point may be a ceiling beam, a staircase turn or the space between a railing and a wall.
Real Delivery Challenge 1: A Narrow Staircase
In the first delivery shown, the mattress could enter the house, but the narrow staircase created a difficult turning point. The delivery team had to control the mattress from different positions while checking the walls, ceiling, railing and available landing space.
Straight staircase width is only one factor. The more difficult question is whether the mattress has enough diagonal turning space at every change of direction.
Common staircase obstacles include:
- A 90-degree or 180-degree turn
- A small intermediate landing
- A low ceiling above the stairs
- Railings that reduce usable width
- Wall lights, ceiling lamps or decorative panels
- Doors opening into the staircase route
- Shoe cabinets, shelves or other fixed furniture
Even when two people can walk comfortably through the staircase, a long rectangular mattress may not be able to rotate through the same space.
Real Delivery Challenge 2: Exceptional Balcony Access
In the second case, the normal route into the upstairs room was not suitable. An alternative balcony route had to be considered so the mattress could enter the house.
This is an exceptional access method, not a standard mattress-delivery service and not something customers should attempt themselves. It may involve serious risks to people, the mattress, the building, windows, balcony railings, roof surfaces and surrounding property.
Whether an unusual route is possible depends on a site-specific assessment, including:
- The height and location of the opening
- The strength and design of the balcony or access area
- Clearance around roofs, awnings, cables and air-conditioning units
- Safe working positions for the delivery team
- Weather and surface conditions
- Required manpower or specialist equipment
- Building-management or property-owner approval

Measure the Clear Opening—not the Wall-to-Wall Distance
When measuring, record the space that is actually usable. A doorway may appear wide from frame to frame, but the door leaf, handle, hinge, grille or shoe cabinet may reduce the clear opening.
- Use a firm measuring tape.
- Open every relevant door and grille fully.
- Measure the narrowest clear width and height.
- Measure staircase landings in both directions.
- Check the lowest ceiling point above each stair turn.
- Record lift-door and cabin dimensions separately.
- Photograph each measurement so the tape and surrounding obstacle are visible.
Measurements help identify obvious problems, but they cannot guarantee access by themselves. Mattress rigidity, carrying angle and three-dimensional turning space must still be considered.
The Six Photos to Send Before Delivery
If your home has a small lift, narrow staircase or unusual entrance, send NeckPro clear photos or a short continuous video before delivery day.
- Building or house entrance: show the complete approach from outside.
- Lift entrance and cabin: include the door opening and full interior.

For photos, place a measuring tape across the narrowest point. For video, begin at the main entrance and walk continuously to the bedroom. A continuous route is often easier to understand than several close-up images with no sense of direction.

Would a Vacuum-Packed Mattress Make Delivery Easier?
In access-restricted homes, a compatible mattress supplied in a compressed or rolled format may be easier to move before opening because the package occupies less space than a full-size mattress.
However, this is not a reason to choose a mattress blindly. Comfort, firmness, body weight, sleeping position and support requirements still matter. Not every mattress is designed to be compressed, and a full-size mattress should never be rolled at home.

The delivery team must protect people first. They must also avoid damaging the mattress, walls, railings, lights, doors and surrounding property.
If the team cannot identify a reasonably safe route, possible next steps may include:
- Removing movable obstructions before another attempt
- Rescheduling after building access is arranged
- Reviewing whether additional manpower is appropriate
- Engaging a specialist mover or lifting service
- Discussing a different suitable mattress format, where allowed and available
- Delivering only to an accessible agreed location, subject to the order terms
Alternative arrangements, waiting time, additional manpower, specialist equipment or a repeat trip may involve extra charges. The appropriate option depends on the actual site and should be confirmed with NeckPro rather than assumed.
Please Prepare the Route Before the Team Arrives
A few preparations can make delivery safer and faster:
- Remove shoes, boxes, small tables and loose rugs from the route.
- Move fragile decorations, mirrors and lamps away from turning areas.
